Andy is a 20th Generation Inheritor of authentic Chen taijiquan (tai chi) and has almost four decades of experience in the martial arts.
Focusing on taijiquan since emigrating to Hong Kong in 1997, he is one of few Westerners to become an 'indoor' disciple and successor to the art of taijiquan under Grandmaster Zhu Tian Cai (one of the four legendary Tigers of Chen Taijiquan).
Recently returning home to Wales, Andy now teaches authentic tai chi in a modern and approachable way throughout the U.K. - and is passionate about bringing the incredible health and wellbeing benefits of this captivating art to everyone.
We have all heard about Tai Chi and seen it on television programmes or in films on China and Chinese culture, but do you really know what Tai Chi is?
Despite the relatively recent trend to place it within the realm of 'new age' health and exercise practices, Tai Chi (more properly written as taijiquan) is first and foremost a martial art.
Taijiquan was developed four hundred years ago in the Ming dynasty as a means of self defence and survival in very dangerous times by a military general named Chen Wangting in rural central China. If this surprises you, please don't be put off by this fact.
You do NOT have to become a martial artist or kung fu expert to enjoy and benefit from tai chi!
However, a proper understanding of the martial concepts underlying taijiquan will deepen your understanding of the art, allowing you to fully realise all of the incredible physical and mental benefits to your wellbeing that are intrinsic to authentic taijiquan.
Embodying ancient philosophy and principles of Chinese medicine, taijiquan is a unique system of mind and body training offering rich health benefits as well as being an effective means of self defence.
There are several styles or families of taijiquan. All of them stem from the Chen family style of taijiquan. Indeed, Chen village in Henan province is now officially recognised as the birthplace of taijiquan.
Taijiquan is a fascinating and rewarding journey of self discovery - providing a dynamic yet mindful antidote to the stresses and strains of the modern world.
Come and find out once and for all what tai chi is really all about.
